FOMENTO, together with Makiber, has built and equipped three laboratories for the quality and safety control of fishery products in:
The scope of the project includes the engineering, civil works and equipment of the buildings and the training of laboratories personnel, and training of fish production and handling chain for fishermen, fish farmers, processors, transporters and inspectors.
The aim of the project is to have a network of laboratories, which control the quality and food safety of fishery products, in order to meet the requirements of European standards in terms of quality control and food safety.
The project has a positive impact on the Kenyan economy as the implementation of this project will strengthen its potential as a producer of quality fish in the area and will allow increased exports and local trade, improving the added value of the product and the quality of life of consumers. In addition, the project has a positive impact on natural resources as it will establish the monitoring of water quality, fishery products and sediments in the fishing environment.
